The Ultimate Backcountry Skiing Checklist

  • January 30, 2019

We’re approaching prime backcountry skiing conditions in the mountains. If you’re planning a trip in the future, check out this checklist for the essentials!

Backcountry Skiing Gear

Your snow and ski gear is of utmost importance when you start planning a Banff adventure. Depending on the company that you book with, they may provide you with a list of gear to bring, but if not, you can always count on this list for the essentials.

  • Skis or Splitboard
  • Climbing skins
  • Ski poles
  • Ski boots
  • Goggles
  • Helmet
  • Ski straps

Backcountry Skiing Safety Gear

It’s essential to put safety first when you’re in the mountains. As with any backcountry adventure, you may be at risk of being caught in an avalanche, getting frostbite, or any other snow-related danger. Before you leave for your trip, you should take an avalanche safety training course. AST 1 and AST 2 courses will teach you what to do in an emergency if you get caught in an avalanche. In addition to the classes, this is a list of all the gear you won’t want to leave behind.

  • Avalanche beacon/transceiver (don’t forget new batteries)
  • Snow shovel
  • Avalanche probe
  • First aid kit
  • Pocket knife
  • Headlamp (and batteries!)
  • Sunscreen and lip protection
  • Compass/GPS
  • Water
  • Extra clothing

Backcountry Skiing Personal Items

If your backcountry skiing adventure is an overnight excursion (the best way to experience the Banff backcountry), you’ll need to pack some personal items for your trip. Keep in mind that you’ll also likely need to find your own accommodations on either end as well as transportation to and from the meeting point. Don’t forget these personal items when you start packing!

  • Sleeping bag (make sure it’s warm enough)
  • Daypack
  • Toothbrush and toiletries
  • Thermal underwear
  • Warm pants and shirts
  • Fleece jacket
  • Insulated jacket or vest
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof pants
  • Thermal socks (bring some extras!)
  • Warm hat
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Camera

If there are any additional items you wish to bring, remember that you’ll be carrying them on your back so you won’t want to add unnecessary weight. These items are essential for being safe and having a good time on your backcountry skiing excursion!

If you’re ready to try some new activities and get outside, Banff is the perfect place to start! At Alpine Air Adventures we pride ourselves on providing safe and fun mountaineering courses for all skill levels and abilities.
