Companion Rescue Refresher

DESCRIPTION:

Join our Companion Rescue Refresher Program, a one-day guided session designed for backcountry users looking to review and update their avalanche safety knowledge. Participants will join the field portion of our AST 1 course, practicing companion rescue, snowpack analysis, and group decision-making. This program ensures your skills align with current best practices and reinforces safe travel techniques in avalanche terrain under the guidance of certified ACMG instructors.

Companion Rescue Refresher Program

One-Day Avalanche Safety Field Session

Program Overview

This program reviews your existing avalanche skills and updates you on the latest companion rescue techniques. Participants will refine their approach to avalanche assessment, group dynamics, and rescue response. This refresher is essential for any backcountry skier, snowboarder, or splitboarder who wants to maintain competence and confidence in avalanche terrain.

Program Itinerary

  • Field day (Bow Summit or Vermillion Pass)
  • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Companion Rescue
  • Snowpack analysis and weak layer recognition
  • Group dynamics, managing expectations & risk tolerance
  • Understanding changing mountain weather conditions and effects on the snowpack
  • Skiing and riding the POW!

Important Program Information

  • Participants under 18: A parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver of liability.
  • Participants under 16: A legal guardian must attend the program with the student.
  • All participants receive Avalanche Canada Curriculum and the 'Avaluator' decision-making tool.
  • Private dates are available. If you have a group of friends organized, contact the AAA office to discuss details.

Course Package

A detailed program package will be emailed 3 days prior to the activity.

Tipping Your Guide

If you had an exceptional experience, tips for guides are always appreciated. A 10–15% gratuity is customary and can be given in cash or arranged through the AAA office.

  • All of our guides have undergone training and evaluation by the ACMG, meeting the established criteria of a globally acknowledged professional organization.
