Join our Ice Climbing Course: Beginner, a hands-on, beginner-friendly guided experience designed for individuals, families, or friends (kids ages 14+) who want to try ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies. Under the guidance of certified ACMG guides, you’ll learn the essential skills to climb safely and confidently on ice, gaining practical experience on real frozen waterfalls while exploring stunning winter scenery in Banff or Canmore.

One-Day Ice Climbing Adventure

Ice Climbing Course Overview

This hands-on program is perfect for anyone new to ice climbing. Participants will learn techniques such as using crampons and ice tools, movement on ice, belaying, and general safety practices in cold weather environments. No prior experience is necessary, and the program is designed to provide a safe, fun, and unforgettable introduction to ice climbing.

Program Itinerary

  • 7:45 AM – Meet your guide at our office in Banff
  • 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM – Climb & Learn at a location in Banff or Canmore (see below for locations)
  • The exact location may vary depending on weather and conditions. Final climbing location will be included in the logistics email.

Banff Locations

  • Johnston Canyon – World famous, stunning views of frozen waterfalls & scenic surroundings
  • Step Right Up – Scenic, secluded ice climbing along Banff's 1A Wildlife corridor
  • Lake Louise Falls & Gullies – Iconic frozen waterfalls, panoramic views of Lake Louise and the historic Lake Louise Chateau

Canmore Locations

  • Grotto Canyon – Beautiful narrow canyon with impressive ice formations, picturesque location
  • Junkyards – Panoramic views of Canmore valley & surrounding mountains, located at the foot of Ha Ling & Grassi Lakes

Course Package

A detailed program package will be emailed 3 days prior to the activity.

Tipping Your Guide

If you had an exceptional experience, tips for guides are always appreciated. A 10–15% gratuity is customary and can be given in cash or arranged through the AAA office.

  • All of our guides have undergone training and evaluation by the ACMG, meeting the established criteria of a globally acknowledged professional organization.
