Springtime is here, and that means only one thing: heading to Banff and testing yourself on some of the best hikes. Now, while there are so many choices (so, so many glorious choices), there are a few essential Banff hikes that you have to do. To help you, we have narrowed it down to five of the best.
The Best Spots For Hiking In Banff In Spring 2019
Johnston Canyon – Perhaps one of the most photographed places in the world, Johnston Canyon is eye-popping candy. Hidden in between the Canyon are some of Banff’s most beautiful waterfalls. While they are great to see frozen in winter, they are just as lovely in the spring. More so, seeing them isn’t a struggle with a small incline path that equals a total of 5km up and down. It is also a trendy spot for Banff hiking tours if you are interested in taking one.
Johnson Lake – Just off the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive, Johnson Lake is a pleasant trail that provides a tranquil getaway for the spring. It is one of the easier hikes to undertake as it is only a 2.8km loop around the lake. It’s pleasant for anyone who wants to try it.
Tunnel Mountain – Interested in seeing the likes of Mount Bourgeau? Tunnel Mountain can help get you there. At only 4.8km (from the Banff Centre at St Julien Road), this winding switchback and steep climb can be a challenge for some people, but it will also get you to see the stunning views of Mount Bourgeau. A challenging Banff hike that you should try out when you’re ready for it.
Fenland Trail – If you want something pleasant, easy and downright comfortable this spring, then the Fenland Trail is for you. A flat 2km loop around the edge of Banff, it will go around the old forest and up the 40 Mile Creek. It shouldn’t take you long, anyone can do it, and it’s still an eye-catching delight.
Sulphur Mountain Trail – Interested in seeing the stunning views of the Bow Valley? This beautiful trail will take you to the top (switchback after switchback), and up the mountainside so you can see it all. You will get as high as 2,500 metres high. Just start at the Banff Hot Springs and give yourself 4 hours or so to get up and down it. It is one of the best Banff hikes to challenge yourself with this spring.
