Ice climbing is a fun and challenging sport that is rising in popularity. The Canadian Rockies in Banff and the surrounding areas are an ideal place to gain some ice climbing experience. If you’re interested in getting started, the first thing you probably want to know is, “how much does it cost?”
Beginner Ice Climbing Courses
If you’ve never been ice climbing before, you should probably gain some experience with an intro to ice climbing course where you can learn the essentials. These courses often include 1-2 days of instruction covering topics such as walking with crampons, belaying top rope, movement skills, placing ice screws, building anchors, and repelling. The courses tend to start at approximately $160, but if you want to learn additional techniques such as multi-pitch climbing or book a private ice climbing course for you and some friends, the price can be as much as $500.
Intermediate Ice Climbing Courses
Intermediate ice climbing courses cover the basics taught in a beginner course and will also delve into more advanced concepts and techniques. A follow-up ice climbing review costs approximately $600 depending on the material you cover and the location you climb. If you dream of completing a multi-pitch climb, now is your chance. You don’t have to wait to be an experienced ice climber; multi-pitch climbing is well within your abilities as an intermediate student. Guided multi-pitch climbs can cost up to $550, but it’s well worth it!
Experienced Ice Climbing Courses
When you go ice climbing with a guide, most excursions tend to be easy or intermediate level courses, but if you’re looking to take your ice climbing skills to the next level, we recommend spending a longer period of time in the mountains. An advanced level course like the Ice Masters is the thrill of a lifetime!
Ice Climbing Equipment
Keep in mind that most ice climbing courses cover the cost of the instruction and a certified guide as well as the use of most of the technical equipment. However, depending on the duration of the Banff adventure, you’ll need to pay for accommodations, transportation and food. Don’t forget to also bring the appropriate clothing, personal items, and some equipment such as a harness and helmet.
